Merlin Rohl will complete a permanent move to Everton this summer with his loan move containing a £18million obligation to buy.

The Toffees signed the midfielder from SC Freiburg on transfer deadline day last summer, but he has failed to make an impression on David Moyes.

The 23-year-old was an unused sub as Everton drew with Brentford on Saturday, raising further question marks over his future at Hill Dickinson Stadium.

Rohl has featured for just five minutes of 10 games since mid-January, in a clear sign of Moyes' attitude towards his impact.

Everton transfer chiefs cannot get out of the obligation to buy, but they may be tasked with finding an instant exit plan for the German.

Merlin Rohl had enjoyed strong form

Football Insider exclusively revealed this week that Everton are relaxed over interest in James Garner, despite several potential suitors emerging for the England international.

The 25-year-old's future could well directly impact Rohl, with the pair sharing a similar position on the pitch.

They had been paired together when Everton beat Aston Villa 1-0 at Villa Park in January, with the midfield battle key to a shock result for the Toffees.

But despite having seen how well Rohl performed from the start that day, Moyes responded by relegating him to the bench for the next seven games.

Whether it is his fondness for Idrissa Gueye, or a dislike of a part of the German's game, the Scot's decisions have left him completely in the dark.

The 23-year-old now faces a permanent move to play under a manager who has shown no trust in his development.

A summer move could well be on the cards for Rohl, although his options are likely to be limited.

David Moyes comments fail to provide clarity

Everton fans have been left just as confused as Rohl presumably is about his usage under Moyes following the Villa game in January.

The Scot spoke about the German ahead of the following match against Leeds United, for which he would elect to leave him out.

"Merlin, I think, is going to take a bit of time," he said. "He's going to fall over the ball a few times and he's going to be a bit uncompromising at times, but he's got other attributes which are really important and I hope that he'll pick them up and he'll get better as we go along.

"So he's done a really good job as well. [Villa] was more like what we were hoping to see from Merlin as well, and I think he's got more to come.”

While comments that sound as if Rohl was set for more opportunities, Moyes' actions have proven the opposite.

The midfielder may well be set for further minutes next season, but he cannot be blamed if he were to seriously consider his future this summer.
