Ex-manager 'baffled' by 'strange' Doherty 'tale' at Tottenham
Alex McLeish has admitted he is “baffled” by Matt Doherty’s situation at Tottenham after a lack of game time under Nuno Espirito Santo.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Scotland boss insisted it was “strange” the 29-year-old has struggled to feature despite his old manager joining him at Spurs.
Nuno began the season with Japhet Tanganga at right-back, although summer signing Emerson Royal has been named in three of Tottenham’s last four Premier League starting XIs.
That includes the 2-1 win over Aston Villa in the Lilywhites’ last league game.
Meanwhile, Doherty has managed to make one substitute appearance totalling seven minutes in the league.
The Republic of Ireland international was a mainstay during Nuno’s spell at Wolves.

He made 142 appearances under the Portuguese boss during their time at Molineux.
McLeish admitted he thought Doherty, as an energetic wing-back, would feature a lot more following the change of manager at Spurs.
“It’s a kind of strange tale, the Doherty one,” McLeish told Football Insider’s Russell Edge.
“He is an energetic full-back, wing-back. I don’t know what’s happened.
“I’m baffled by that one, that Matt’s not featuring more.
“It can only be down that he is not at the right level at the moment.”
Doherty, who left Wolves for Spurs last summer, played 29 times during his first season in north London.
However, he has made just four appearances this season.
All but one of those have come in the Europa Conference League qualifiers and group stage.
Meanwhile, Emerson Royal has played six times since joining the club from Barcelona this summer.
