Ex-manager excited by Tottenham 'wonderboy' Sessegnon after Hotspur Way reveal

Alex McLeish has backed Antonio Conte to get the best out of Tottenham “wonderboy” Ryan Sessegnon.

The former Scotland manager, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, admitted the 21-year-old has failed to live up to expectations since joining Spurs in 2019.

Speaking to the Times (24th November), Sessegnon revealed Conte wants him to focus on getting forward in training and insisted the Italian’s tactics are “perfect” for him.

Conte himself stated the former Fulham starlet has “great potential” and admitted he “can’t wait to see his performance”.

McLeish suggested working under the new manager would help the youngster develop significantly over the rest of the season.

Asked if he thought Conte could get the best out of Sessegnon, McLeish told Football Insider’s Russell Edge: “You would hope so.

“He was cited as the wonderboy a couple of years ago. He’s still very young and you have to give the kid a chance to develop. They don’t have all the answers in the beginning.

“You see some great things in their game which is why he was bigged up so much back at the time. He never quite fulfilled those expectations at a very young age.

“He’s growing, he’s getting stronger, he’s getting more wise. The more he plays at the level, the better he will become in understanding his own game, understanding, his club’s strategies and also his opponent.”

Sessegnon made his first Premier League appearance since January 2020 in the 2-1 win over Leeds United.

He spent last season on loan at Hoffenheim and was injured for the opening weeks of this season at Spurs.
