Ex-manager laments Tottenham losing 'specialist' Gazzaniga after official news

Alex McLeish has claimed Tottenham are set to lose a “specialist” backup goalkeeper in Paulo Gazzaniga.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Scotland manager claimed the Argentina international has a different “mentality” to other keepers.

As confirmed by Tottenham last week, the 29-year-old will leave at the end of his contract this month.

He failed to make a single appearance for the North London club during the 2020-21 season after Joe Hart leapfrogged him in the pecking order.

Gazzaniga spent the second half of the season on loan at Spanish side Elche where he made eight appearances.

McLeish applauded the shot-stopper for acting as a reliable backup during his time at Spurs.

McLeish told Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge: “He is a specialist. A specialist in being a number two.

“I’ve seen situations where a number two stayed as a number two for ten years; he’s happy with that.

“Now do you say is he not ambitious enough? But you’re making marvellous earnings, you appreciate the number one goalies a bit above and you’re ready to step in any time

“You need to have a certain mentality about that as well, so it is a specialist job.

“Many goalkeepers over the last 10-15 years have proven that.”

Gazzaniga joined Spurs from Southampton in 2017 but featured sparingly behind number one Hugo Lloris.

The Argentine made a total of 37 appearances for the Lilywhites, including 18 times in the Premier League during the 2019-20 season after Lloris dislocated his elbow.

In other news, an ex-Spurs goalkeeper has urged the club to think twice before re-hiring Mauricio Pochettino as manager.
