Ex-Premier League referee stunned as 'unbelievable' Newcastle image emerges

Keith Hackett was left stunned after two Newcastle United players took to the field against Wolves both wearing Javier Manquillo’s number 19 shirt.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-FIFA and Premier League referee insisted it was fortunate the mishap did not cause a major problem for the referee Graham Scott.

Captain for the day Manquillo and Fernandez were both spotted in the 19 shirt during the second half at Molineux.

Newcastle lost the game 2-1 as Hwang Hee-Chan scored a brace for the hosts.

“This is important,” Hackett told Football Insider‘s Connor Whitley.

“There are all sorts of problems that could arise here. I find it unbelievable at the Premier League level that has happened.

“Deary me, I think that is a basic refereeing error that is not acceptable at this level. I just find it incredible.

“I didn’t pick up on it and I watched the match. This is a rarity.

“That could have put Graham Scott, the referee, in all sorts of problem. Manquillo was shown a yellow card too which only compounds the issue.

“It’s no good saying the referee should recognise all the players on the pitch by name. We don’t, we go on the shirt number and team sheet.

“They’ve broken some of the regulations that the Premier League has in place.

“The fact they both started the game makes it more difficult for the fourth official but it’s one that should have been caught.

“The reality is that there are a set of regulations, there all sort of issues about the potential for problems. In the eyes of some people it might be ordinary, it’s not ordinary.

“Why do we have numbers? Why do we have names on shirts? Changes in the game have brought this about so all sorts of people can recognise who the player is.”
