Ex-Stoke coach shares 'big' Souttar reveal after Aston Villa transfer update

Kevin Phillips fears a move to Aston Villa would be a “big step up” for Stoke City defender Harry Souttar.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Premier League striker revealed he has been “amazed” by the progression of the 22-year-old he worked with while a coach at the bet365 Stadium in 2018.

Souttar has been one of Stoke’s standout performers over the past 18 months.

He has started 11 times for the Potters this season, having made 43 appearances across all competitions in the previous campaign.

As revealed by Football Insider (October 7th), Villa have set their sights on signing the Australia international ahead of January.

However, Phillips has urged the centre-half to remain with the Championship side.

“I watched him closely the other night against West Brom and of course I have worked with him,” he told Football Insider‘s Dylan Childs.

“I am amazed at the progression he has made from when I coached him. In all honesty, I did not see him developing in this way. He definitely had it in him but he needed to drive himself. He has done that though, so credit to him.

“I think the Premier League would be a big step up for him but he is full of confidence right now. I would like to see him get promoted with Stoke, rather than moving to a Villa.

“I am unsure whether he’s ready. He is definitely performing for Stoke right now.”
