Frank McAvennie is backing Tyler Roberts to become a fan favourite if he makes the move to Newcastle United from Leeds United.
The former West Ham forward, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claims Roberts should leave Elland Road for the good of his career.
Football Insider has revealed Newcastle United are keeping close tabs on the Wales international ahead of a potential summer raid.
This site understands £10million would be enough to prise Roberts away from Elland Road.
Roberts, 22, has made 26 Premier League appearances this season but has only started on 14 occasions.
McAvennie insists Roberts would go straight into Newcastle’s starting 11 if he makes the move to St James’ Park.
When asked if Roberts has to move for the good of his career, McAvennie told Football Insider‘s Ben Wild, “If he’s not getting a game, I think so.
“If you’re not playing you have to ask to leave. If he goes to Newcastle he’ll be a starter straight away.
“They have great fans and they will love him up there if he hits the ground running.
“Roberts can ask for guarantees but the manager can’t give them. He can only give them if he’s playing well.
“You can’t tell a player he will always start because what if he starts playing badly? It’s a stupid statement.
“At his age, he’s got to be playing.”
The attacker scored his first Premier League goal in this week’s 2-0 win over Southampton.
Newcastle travel to Fulham on Sunday after already securing their Premier League status.
