Ex-striker stunned by Tottenham after manager update today from Di Marzio
Noel Whelan has branded Tottenham as a “laughing stock” after talks with Paulo Fonseca and Gennaro Gattuso collapsed.
The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, suggested Spurs’ aspirations are not “big enough” to lure manager’s to north London.
As reported by reputed Italian journalist Gianluca Di Marzio on Thursday (June 17th), talks between Spurs and Fonseca fell through due to tax reasons.
The Lilywhites reportedly spoke to Gennaro Gattuso but Di Marzio claimed on Friday (June 18th) they had ended discussions.
Whelan admitted he could hardly fathom how badly Spurs’ hunt for Jose Mourinho’s replacement has gone.
He suggested neither players nor managers would want to join the club.

Asked for his reaction to Di Marzio’s news, Whelan told Football Insider’s Russell Edge: “Spurs are a laughing stock. I don’t think there’ll be too many Tottenham fans that won’t be thinking the same.
“They’ll be wondering what the hell is going on over there? It’s speculation after speculation. Managers not wanting to come because they’re not in the Champions League.
“Their aspirations aren’t big enough for the manager to want to come to Tottenham. Players aren’t going to come because they’re not in the Champions League.
“Straight away that stops you from attracting the stars are in the Euros now. Big players that are at other big clubs, they want to be playing on the big stage and challenging for honours.
“I can’t see Tottenham challenging for a long time, I really can’t. That is the problem. They’re so far behind Man City, Chelsea, Liverpool Manchester United now. I do wonder where they’re gonna end up at the end of next season.”
Tottenham sacked Mourinho back on April 19th after just 17 months in charge.
