Jose Mourinho trusts Joe Rodon and the Wales international is now the first-choice centre-half at Tottenham.
That is the view of former White Hart Lane number one Paul Robinson, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the 23-year-old’s impressive display in the 2-2 draw at Newcastle United on Sunday.
Rodon was handed his second consecutive Premier League start yesterday, with Toby Alderweireld and Eric Dier out of favour in north London.
The £11million summer signing from Swansea completed 94 per cent of his passes and won 69 per cent of his duels at St. James’ Park. (Wyscout)
He has made 11 appearances across all competitions for Spurs in the 2020-21 campaign.
When asked by Football Insider if Rodon had put Spurs’ other centre-halves to shame, Robinson said: “He really has, he was exceptional at Newcastle and clearly Mourinho is starting to trust him.
“He is putting his faith in Rodon because of the defensive problems they have had, the defensive frailties.
“Mourinho has been chopping and changing personnel at the back almost every week it seems but every single time Rodon has been given his opportunity, he has excelled.
“At the moment, it looks like it is him and another. He’s showing the more experienced players how it’s done.”
When quizzed on his decision to leave Toby Alderweireld out, Mourinho defended the selection of Rodon and Davinson Sanchez: “What are you trying to say? That Davinson Sanchez and Rodon they were very bad?
“If you want to say that then you say that but I’m not going to say that.”
