AC Milan are lining up a shock move for Nottingham Forest defender Matty Cash, Football Insider can reveal.

The Italian giants have turned their attention to trying to sign the 22-year-old after losing regular right-back Davide Calabria through injury.

A Milan source has told Football Insider that the club are plotting a late-window swoop for Cash after being impressed by his performances for Forest.

The Forest academy product signed a contract extension last September that runs until the summer of 2023.

Milan are ready to test the Championship giants' resolve to keep the right-back with a move this month.

Cash has emerged as one of the best players in his position outside of the Premier League.

He has taken his game to new heights under Sabri Lamouchi this season and has been a mainstay of their team as they challenge for promotion to the Premier League.

Cash has started 25 of Forest's 27 league matches this season and produced some impressive performances.

He has made a big impact in an attacking as well as defensive sense, scoring twice and providing four assists from Championship matches alone.

The interest from five-times Champions League winners Milan is a surprise given their standing and history but they are in a rebuilding phase having dropped out of European football and to tenth in the Serie A table.

They have also been linked with youthful British-based left-backs Antonee Robinson and Aaron Hickey of Wigan Athletic and Hearts respectively.
