Gabriel Agbonlahor has claimed Jesse Lingard would not be a starter at Aston Villa if he was to complete a move to Villa Park.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley, the legendary former Villa striker insisted his former club are well stocked with attacking midfielders.
TeamTALK report Dean Smith’s side are one of six Premier League clubs tracking the 24-time England international who is set to ask to leave Manchester United.
The 27-year-old has not featured in the Premier League at all this term and his current contract runs out at the end of the season.
United hold an option to extend the deal on its current terms for a further year.
“It’s a tough one because I’m sure Jesse Lingard will have a lot of suitors,” Agbonlahor told Football Insider.
“I feel like in that position where he plays Aston Villa have enough cover. They’ve got the likes of McGinn, Grealish can play there and Barkley coming back. They’ve got Hourihane to come in too.
“Jesse Lingard wants to be a guaranteed starter wherever he goes next and I don’t think he’d be a guaranteed starter at Aston Villa.
“Whichever move Lingard decides to go for, I’m sure it’s one where his agent will be wanting him to start every week.
“I’m not sure Dean Smith would want to bring in a player who is wanting to start. That will be Ross Barkley who is guaranteed to start.”
Lingard was limited to just nine Premier League starts for United last season and did not complete the full 90 minutes once.
This term, the attacker, who is valued at £12.6million by Transfermarkt, has been limited to just two appearances in the Carabao Cup.
