Gabriel Agbonlahor has tipped Rangers defender Connor Goldson to sign a new contract before the new year.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley, the former England and Aston Villa striker hailed the 27-year-old as a “great player”.

Football Insider revealed at the weekend the Light Blues are keen to extend Goldson’s current deal before the winter transfer window.

The £6million valued centre-back will enter the final 18 months of his current contract at the turn of the year.

He attracted the interest of Premier League sides Leeds United, Everton, West Ham and West Brom over the summer.

Goldson has not missed a minute of league action this season and Rangers now want to secure his long-term future to stop his head being turned in January.

And Agbonlahor has insisted that is a real possibility if he enters the final months of his contract.

He told Football Insider“When you let people get down to that final year of their contract their value goes down because clubs know they can get into a player’s head and make them not sign a new contract and get them on the cheap.

“I’m sure Steven Gerrard and Rangers will definitely be working on to get him signed up to a long-term contract.

“He’s been a great player for them.”

Goldson has missed just four Scottish Premiership games since his arrival in Glasgow from Brighton & Hove Albion in the summer of 2018.

He has played 126 games across all competitions for the Light Blues in that time.

In other Rangers news, Alan Hutton has claimed the club “missed a trick” by not signing a Scotland international after a £2million fee with a London club was agreed.
