Arsenal are planning a scouting mission tomorrow for Hungary midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai, Football Insider understands.

Unai Emery is the market for midfield reinforcements in January with the unsettled Granit Xhaka expected to leave the Emirates after being dropped from the first-team and stripped of the club captaincy.

An Arsenal source has told Football Insider that the club regard RB Salzburg ace Szoboszlai as a genuine contender to replace Xhaka in their midfielder.

The Gunners will dispatch scouts to keep tabs on him while in action for Hungary tomorrow in their crunch Euro 2020 qualifier away to Wales.

Szoboszlai, 19, is a long-term transfer target for Arsenal, who tried to sign him in the summer window but were knocked back.

The Premier League giants have continued to monitor him during the season as they weigh up a new move when the transfer window reopens in January.

Szoboszlai is regarded as one of the best young players in Europe after impressing for club and country during the last 18 months and a host of clubs are chasing his signature.

The likes of Juventus and Inter Milan have registered their interest in Szoboszlai recently while several of Arsenal’s Premier League rivals are also expected to watch the midfielder against Wales as they keep tabs on his progress.

RB Salzburg are keen to keep hold of Szoboszlai, but they know they could face a battle to fend off interest in the player in January if they fail to progress in the Champions League beyond the new year.

Szoboszlai is such a precocious talent that he has already been capped seven times by Hungary and has scored his first international goal.

He can operate in a variety of midfield positions, including the central midfield slot occupied by Xhaka for the last three years and he’s been lined up as a potential candidate to replace him.

The teenager has 16 appearances for Salzburg in all competitions this season, scoring four goals and supplying four assists.
