Exclusive: Danny Mills left baffled as Aston Villa work on new reported deal

Danny Mills admitted he was baffled over why Aston Villa reportedly would want to sign Galatasaray midfielder Steven Nzonzi in January.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Laura O’Leary, the former England international isn’t convinced Nzonzi would make a big enough impact to change the Villains’ fortunes in January.

It was recently reported that the Midlands giants were working on a deal to sign the 31-year-old midfielder and even spoke to the Frenchman earlier in the window.

Mills revealed he thought Nzonzi was a quality player but suggested he’s someone Dean Smith should try to sign in the future, not in January, as adding goals to the team is the priority.

When asked if Villa would be on to a winner by signing Nzonzi as he’s a quality player, Mills told Football Insider: “Yeah he is, but someone like Nzonzi is he going to make a big difference straight away and change the fortunes of Aston Villa?

“I don’t think he is, I don’t see that happening, so I just don’t get it, but I do get it from a long-term perspective.

“I can see what he’s all about and what he offers, but right now, would money be spent better elsewhere? You’d have to say yes.

“It’s not that he’s a bad player, it’s not that he wouldn’t add something, but they need goals and someone to fire them to safety and keep in the Premier League.

“So while Nzonzi is a good player, that’s a long-term deal, he’s not a short-term fix which is what they need.”

Nzonzi has played 15 times for Galatasary this season, while on loan with them from AS Roma.

The veteran midfielder has previously played 195 times in the Premier League as he has had spells at Stoke City and Blackburn Rovers.
