Aston Villa are plotting a swoop to sign Huddersfield Town defender Terence Kongolo, Football Insider understands.

Premier League new boys Villa are looking to strengthen their defensive options this summer and Kongolo figures highly on their wanted list.

A source at the Midlands giants told Football Insider the club are prepared to offer the 25-year-old a route back to the English top flight following the Terriers' relegation.

Netherlands international Kongolo can play at centre-back or left-back and his versatility makes him an attractive proposition to manager Dean Smith.

His club have been busy in the transfer market so far this summer and Kongolo could be an alternative to Tyrone Mings, who has returned to Bournemouth following his successful loan spell at Villa Park last season.

Kongolo, who joined Huddersfield from Monaco last summer in a club record deal after initially signing on loan, made 32 Premier League appearances last season.

The 25-year-old was one of Huddersfield's shining lights despite their relegation and they now face a fight to keep hold of him.

In other Aston Villa news, it can be REVEALED that the club have set their sights on signing two senior Southampton players.
