Darren Bent has named Aston Villa star Jack Grealish as one of the best midfielders in England after his form this season.
The former Villa and England striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, says that the 24-year-old can do no more for his side after a series of dazzling performances in the Premier League.
Grealish has played in 22 of the club’s 24 top-flight games this season, scoring seven times and setting up a further five assists for his teammates.
With international friendlies coming up in March and the European Championship over the summer, Bent says that Grealish has got to be in the conversation as one of the in-form stars in the country.
“He’s becoming a massive player for them – not becoming, he is a massive player for them,” Bent told Football Insider.
“It’s a tough one because at the minute he’s being asked to do so much on his own it’s hard for him, he doesn’t quite know what more he can do and I genuinely believe now he’s in that England squad.
“I think he’s been playing as well as anyone in the country, if anything he’s probably our best midfield player at the minute, creative (midfielder). I guess what he’s got going against him, Gareth Southgate, he’s not sure about his trust issues or where he sees him best.
“You’d have to think on this kind of form he’s got to be in Gareth’s thinking now and I think the next squad in March will tell us all we need to know but he’s been absolutely superb this season.”
Grealish, who is also captain at Villa Park, has played the full 90 minutes in all but one of the Premier League games he has featured in this season.
He continued his record as a mainstay under Dean Smith on Tuesday night, playing in a left-wing role during the Villans’ dramatic 2-1 win over Watford.
