League One pair Fleetwood Town and Blackpool are in talks to sign former Bolton Wanderers midfielder Jason Lowe on a free transfer, Football Insider understands.
The 28-year-old is currently without a club after leaving the Trotters when his contract expired at the end of June.
A recruitment source has told Football Insider that north-west rivals Blackpool and Fleetwood are both keen on taking Lowe to the Fylde Coast this summer and are in negotiations over a deal.
The former Blackburn star was a mainstay for Bolton during his three years at the club and made 24 appearances across all competitions last season.
However, with the Wanderers being relegated to League Two, the defensive has left the ex-Premier League side and is in discussions over a move over to the north-west coast.
Fleetwood manager Joey Barton is looking to bolster his side after the Cod Army’s play-off disappointment earlier this month, with the former Newcastle star facing the prospect of losing a handful of midfielders this summer.
The contracts of Glenn Whelan, Kyle Dempsey and Dean Marney are all set to expire, while Jordan Rossiter was only on loan at Highbury from Rangers.
Blackpool meanwhile are hoping to improve on a 13th-placed finish this season and while midfielder Jay Spearing has left on a free transfer, they have signed former Fleetwood man Oliver Sarkic after his release from Burton.
Lowe has just 36 games of League One experience under his belt, having spent the majority of his career in the Championship.
He has played 184 times in England’s second tier, while he also has 33 Premier League games to his name from his time at Blackburn.
