Former Everton defender Gethin Jones has agreed a deal to join Bolton Wanderers, Football Insider can exclusively reveal.
The 24-year-old is available on a free transfer after his contract at Carlisle United expired at the end of June.
A recruitment source has told Football Insider that the details of the transfer are being finalised after the right-back agreed personal terms with the Wanderers.
The Welsh defender made 30 appearances last season for Carlisle as they struggled to an 18th-placed finish in League Two.
Jones is a product of the Everton academy and played alongside Jonjoe Kenny at youth level, before moving to Fleetwood Town in 2018.
He is yet to be capped by Wales at senior level but has made two appearances for their Under-21 side.
Bolton, who last month appointed Ian Evatt as their new manager, are trying to build a squad capable at returning to League One at the first time of asking.
The former Premier League side were relegated from the third-tier of English football last season having suffered a 12-point deduction at the beginning of the 2019/20 campaign.
However, there is a renewed sense of optimism at the University of Bolton Stadium with Evatt at the helm, a year on from Football Ventures takeover of the club.
The Wanderers have wasted no time in the transfer market and have already signed Eoin Doyle from Swindon Town.
The Irish striker was League Two’s top scorer last season with a staggering 26 goals in 34 league appearances.
Jones will form a new-look defence alongside George Taft, Ricardo Santos and Liam Gordon, all of whom arrived this summer.
The Perth-born defender prefers to be used as a right-back but can also play as a right-sided midfielder or as a left-back.
