Exclusive: Bruce tips Leeds to table new contract offer after player talks reveal
Alex Bruce admits he would not be surprised to see Leeds United hand Gaetano Berardi a new contract at Elland Road before the end of the season.
The former Leeds and Hull defender, speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, highlighted the importance of keeping experienced characters in and around the dressing room, regardless of how much they play.
Football Insider revealed last month that the club had stalled discussions over a new deal for the Swiss international, his current terms coming to an end this summer.
As one of the most experienced players at Elland Road, Bruce says that keeping Berardi around could be very important for the club whether he plays or not.
Bruce told Football Insider: “Obviously only the people at the club can tell you how much importance he has off the field.
“Sometimes I don’t think there’s anything wrong with giving players contracts, when they get a little bit older, just to have in the dressing room, play a bit-part but be that model professional, that experienced player who can help the younger players.

“These kind of characters are vital to any dressing room and team, no matter what level you play at, these players are vital in the dressing room. If they do give him one, it wouldn’t surprise me, that’s for sure.”
Berardi, who arrived at Leeds back in 2014, has 149 appearances under his belt for the club, playing in a variety of roles along the backline.
He has 19 games under his belt this season, filling in when the likes of Liam Cooper and Kalvin Phillips have been injured.
In other Leeds United news, Darren Bent says Elland Road is “perfect” for a 26-year-old on the move in summer.
