Alex Bruce has tipped Tottenham manager Jose Mourinho to leave attacking duo Steven Bergwijn and Erik Lamela on the bench against Sheffield United tomorrow.
The former Premier League defender, speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, believes the Portuguese boss will be reluctant to change a winning side after a 2-0 victory over West Ham.
Lamela and Bergwijn, who both starred in the 1-1 draw against Manchester United, were dropped in favour of Dele Alli and Lucas Moura for the London derby versus the Irons.
Having seen the English and Brazilian star play their part in the Lilywhites’ first victory since lockdown, Bruce believes Lamela and Bergwijn are set to stay on the bench.
Bruce told Football Insider: “He’s got some good options, hasn’t he? When you can leave two players out and bring two players like that into the team, it gives everyone a boost.
“Competition for places is healthy, I’m sure that’s what Jose wants. I don’t believe you change a winning team so I’d be very, very surprised if he changes it.
“However, Jose will have one eye on the games coming up. To play two games in a week might be difficult for a few, with injuries and what have you. You always try and keep a winning team and I’d be surprised if he doesn’t do that.”
Of the attacking quartet, Lucas has played the most times across all competitions this season, with 40 appearances to his name.
Spurs sit seventh in the Premier League ahead of Thursday’s clash, with the Blades one point and two places behind Mourinho’s men.
