Alex Bruce has tipped Tottenham 21-year-old Japhet Tanganga to save Jose Mourinho millions of pounds in the summer transfer window.

The former Premier League centre-back, speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, insists there is “nothing better” for fans than seeing a homegrown talent establish themselves in the first team.

With the summer transfer window around the corner, the Lilywhites are reportedly chasing multi-million-pound deals for RB Leipzig centre-back Dayot Upamecano and AS Monaco colossus Guillermo Maripan.

However, having seen 21-year-old Tanganga break through the youth ranks and emerge as a first-team option since January, Bruce believes the youngster needs to be given a chance to stake his claim.

Bruce told Football Insider: “There’s nothing better as a supporter and as a lover of football than to see a young lad come through and do well.

“If they get given the opportunity you want them to do well and it would be nice to see the lad go into the team and I’m sure all Tottenham supporters would probably agree with me, there’s nothing better than to see come through the ranks.

“They’ve had it before with good players in the past, we just have to watch this space. It would obviously save them a few quid if he does come in because they won’t have to dive into the transfer market.”

Tangana has played 11 times for the senior side so far, with Mourinho starting him in six of the club’s last eight Premier League games.

A natural centre-half, he has proven his versatility at the back, playing as a full-back on both flanks as well as in the middle.
