Celtic are in advanced talks to sign versatile Sheffield Wednesday midfielder Liam Shaw, Football Insider can exclusively reveal.

The Glasgow giants are working on a deal to sign Shaw, 19, on a pre-contract ahead of his Wednesday deal expiring in the summer.

A Celtic source has told Football Insider that negotiations have advanced over the last 24 hours to the point the club are well placed to agree terms.

Shaw has held talks with Wednesday over a new contract but there is no agreement and that has opened the door for the Scottish champions.

It comes as Celtic also battle Bournemouth to sign Preston North End’s Ben Davies, who is also a free agent at the end of the season.

Neil Lennon’s side are discussing various formulas with Davies, including a pre-contract as well as a potential permanent deal this month.

There is expected to be a huge overhaul of the Celtic squad this year on the back of a calamitous campaign that has seen their 10-in-a-row hopes fall short.

Shaw has been scouted after emerging from the Wednesday youth ranks to make a big impact at first-team level.

Capable of playing in various positions including central midfield and centre-back, he has made seven Championship starts among 12 appearances this season.

They have been almost evenly split between defence and midfield with his versatility making him a big asset to interim manager Neil Thompson.

In other news, a big update on Celtic pursuit of Ben Davies can be revealed after overnight talks.
