Championship sides Luton, Wigan and Blackburn Rovers are chasing a move for Sheffield United defender Ben Heneghan this month, Football Insider understands.

The 26-year-old is currently on loan at League One side Blackpool and has been a mainstay for the Tangerines, playing 18 times in the third tier of English football this term.

A source at Sheffield United has told Football Insider that the centre-back is now in demand from Championship sides after his performances this season, his loan spell at Bloomfield Road set to expire on the 14th January.

With the former Everton youngster out of contract this summer, Luton, Wigan and Blackburn Rovers are looking to secure his capture on a permanent basis before he becomes a free agent.

Heneghan, who arrived at Sheffield United from Motherwell back in 2017, has struggled to make a meaningful impact with the Blades with just one first-team appearance under his belt.

After a difficult first season at Bramall Lane, his one and only appearance coming against Preston North End in the FA Cup, he joined Blackpool for the 2018/19 campaign, turning out 49 times across all competitions.

He has added another 19 appearances to his name this season, scoring three goals along the way, and could make his final Blackpool outing in the FA Cup tie away at Reading on Saturday.

He could help bolster the Championship’s leakiest defence at Luton should he join the Hatters this month, while Wigan and Blackburn are also keen on pouncing for his capture.

In other Sheffield United news, Football Insider can reveal that the club are plotting a move to sign a defender with Champions League experience under his belt.
