Exclusive: Chelsea close to signing midfield sensation in 7-figure deal

Chelsea are increasingly confident of signing Derby County sensation Max Bird this summer, Football Insider can reveal.

This site revealed last month the Londoners have set their sights on prising the midfielder, 19, from the former club of manager Frank Lampard and his assistant Jody Morris.

A Chelsea source has told Football Insider that the club are making progress in their pursuit of Bird and a summer deal is looking highly possible.

Derby value their academy product at around the £5million mark.

However, the financial chaos caused by the Covid-19 pandemic mean Chelsea could look to seal a cut-price deal and get a significant sum shaved off the price.

Transfer fees and wages are set to tumble this summer as even the elite clubs fasten their belts and brace themselves for reduced revenues over the next six to 12 months.

That has not stopped Chelsea pursuing a young talent that Lampard and Morris know well from their season at Pride Park.

Bird is regarded as a young player of great promise and talent after graduating from the Derby youth ranks to make 27 first-team appearances.

The first eight of those came last season when Lampard was at helm and Bird has played another 19 matches since Phillip Cocu took over as manager.

He is a central midfielder and has made the defensive midfield role his own since Christmas.

Bird started 12 of Derby’s 13 league games before football was suspended in mid-March.

He has just over two years remaining on the contract that he signed in March of last year.

In other Chelsea news, it can be REVEALED that the club have reached an agreement on a landmark new deal.
