Exclusive: Salford City in advanced talks to sign Leeds ace Robbie Gotts on loan

Salford City are in advanced talks to sign Leeds United midfielder Robbie Gotts, Football Insider can exclusively reveal.

The 21-year-old has spent the first half of the season at League One leaders Lincoln City on a season-long agreement.

But a Leeds source has told Football Insider that discussions have taken place about terminating the Lincoln deal at the midway point and sending Gotts on loan to Salford instead.

That would mean the versatile youngster, who plays both central midfield and right-back, dropping down a division.

It also come after Gotts scored his first professional goal on Tuesday night in Lincoln’s 4-0 EFL Trophy win against Accrington.

Despite that high point, the youngster has been in and out of the League One leaders’ side.

He has made just four league starts among 12 appearances for Lincoln and has been an unused substitute in their last two League One fixtures.

Salford are also well placed for a promotion push in League Two. They are fifth in the division and just three points behind leaders Carlisle United.

Marcelo Bielsa and his staff rate Gotts highly and were convinced that League One would provide the best platform for the rising star’s development this season.

He moved to the third after being the subject of intense interest from EFL clubs including Huddersfield Town, Swindon Town and Doncaster Rovers in the last window.

Leeds have been reluctant to send Gotts to a team who are likely to be caught up in a relegation battle or where he may not get the senior playing time he needs.

He has made three senior appearances for his parent club, two of which came last season and the third in last September’s EFL Cup defeat to Hull.
