Danny Mills has suggested Connor Goldson could be a shrewd buy for Leeds United or West Ham and pointed out that there were doubts over Virgil van Dijk when he came to the Premier League.

The former England international, speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs, admitted there will be worries over whether the Rangers defender can handle the wealth of quality attackers in the Premier League.

Football Insider has revealed the 27-year-old is the subject of interest from the Hammers, Leeds, West Brom and Fulham and was valued at £6million going into the summer.

Goldson still has two years remaining on his contract at Ibrox having joined from Brighton in July 2018.

“There will always be that worry,” Mills told Football Insider. “The Premier League has some of the best players in the world but equally, everybody needs an opportunity.

“Who would have thought that Sheffield United would have done so well? A lot of those players played in League One and the Championship and people did not give them much hope, including me, but they have proved us all wrong.

“Sometimes a quality player needs an opportunity.

“People did not think that Van Dijk could do it early on. That is why he went to Southampton.

“Players need an opportunity and Goldson may just need somebody to put faith in him.”

Van Dijk spent two years in the Scottish Premiership with Celtic before signing for Southampton in 2015.

Five years later and the Netherlands international has completed a £70million move to Liverpool, won the Champions League and is all but certain to add a Premier League title.

In other West Ham news, Kevin Phillips has told Football Insider where he expects Adam Lallana will be playing his football next season.
