Darren Bent has suggested Mauricio Pochettino has another winger signing “up his sleeve” at Tottenham this summer.
The London giants announced the signing of teenager Jack Clarke from Leeds United on Tuesday but he was immediately loaned back for next season.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, Bent believes Spurs would have held on to Clarke at least until the end of the transfer window unless they were confident of recruiting a winger who could go straight into their first team.
Asked if Clarke’s loan hints at another winger signing by Tottenham this summer, Bent replied, “Yeah, potentially. They’ve got Heung-min Son,
they’ve got [Erik] Lamela, Lucas Moura, they’ve got these guys. You just wonder with the whole Christian Eriksen situation as well – is he going to be there, is he not – I thought they would have signed Jack Clarke and kept him with the squad for now.
“If you feel you’ve got enough cover, you could send him back to Leeds whenever you felt like it. Every team in the Championship’s going to want to take him.
“For me, I would have probably kept him for pre-season, see how he got on, see where the numbers were, see how we were getting on and if we were over covered and it didn’t look like he was going to get much game time then brilliant, send him back to Leeds, further his development by playing games.
“Spurs need players. You saw how thin their squad was last season when they lost Harry Kane, Dele Alli was out for a little bit. They were thin, they were quite light so you’d think buying someone like a Jack Clarke, you’d want to get him ready now unless they’re planning on signing someone else.
“For Jack Clarke, I’d have liked to have seen him around the squad, maybe do pre-season with Spurs first, see how he got on, see how he lives up to the mark.
“For all they know, he might have played some pre-season games, excelled, looked really comfortable and then you keep him. At the end of the day, Spurs are a well run football club as I well know. Pochettino is a fantastic manager, nothing will go on at that football club without his sanction.
“Maybe they might have jumped the gun but Pochettino’s a clever manager so he must have something else up his sleeve.”
