Darren Bent has suggested that Crystal Palace star Wilfried Zaha has his heart set on moving to Arsenal after failing to leave the Eagles over the summer transfer window.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, the former Tottenham and England hitman says that the Gunners were never going to get the 26-year-old for the £40million offer reportedly tabled over summer but that the player will have been desperate to see a move come off.
Zaha has confirmed in the past that he was a boyhood Arsenal fan and that he is still a staunch supporter of the north Londoners.
Bent insists that the Palace man will have been wanting to turn a childhood dream into reality by joining Unai Emery’s side this summer and suggests he still has his heart set on moving to the Emirates Stadium in the future.
Bent told Football Insider: “He handed a transfer request in now, whether that’s a transfer request in because he wanted to go to Arsenal – he’s an Arsenal fan – so I’m pretty sure that he handed the request in wanting to go to Arsenal.
“With Arsenal only putting up £40million, he was never, ever going to get to leave for that price. Arsenal’s the team he supports, it’s in London, probably wouldn’t have to move house – all these things come into play.
“What happens at the end of the season or even in January, I do not know.”
Zaha has not scored or assisted a single goal in the Premier League this season, start in four out of five of their games in the top flight so far.
He was also heavily linked with Everton over the summer, the Toffees eventually turning to Arsenal winger Alex Iwobi to bolster their attack in a deadline day deal.
