Exclusive: Darren Bent suggests official Liverpool update may be worrying sign for 28-year-old
Darren Bent suggested Liverpool recalling defender Nathaniel Phillips from his loan may be a worrying sign for Joel Matip.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Laura O’Leary, Bent explained that Matip’s injury could be a little worse than originally feared, hence why they opted to cancel the loan of someone who was getting valuable game time.
Jurgen Klopp officially provided an update on why Phillips had been recalled and explained it was done to help the club out with Matip, Dejan Lovren and Fabinho all out injured.
The Liverpool boss did go onto to reveal he believes Matip will be back from injury by February but admitted the club will have to wait and see.
Bent acknowledged that while it wasn’t a good sign for the 28-year-old centre-back, his injury may see a chance come Phillips’ way.
When asked whether Nathaniel Phillips being recalled is a really worrying sign for Joel Matip as it may imply there’s a fear he is set to be stuck on sidelines a while longer, Bent told Football Insider: “Yeah potentially, that’s not a good sign for Joel Matip.

“As the injury could be a little bit worse than they feared, but listen it’s all about next man up.
“I do hate to see injuries and people get opportunities only due to injuries, that’s probably the worse thing but that’s part and parcel of the game, unfortunately.
“These things do happen and he’s now been recalled.
“Whether he plays or not we don’t know, Gomez played on Boxing Day and was outstanding.
“But if he gets an opportunity, he has to take his chances and it’s about whether he can do that.”
Phillips was meant to be on loan with Vfb Stuttgart until the end of the season and did manage 11 appearances for them before being recalled.
The 22-year-old has never featured for the Reds’ first-team before, but previously regularly featured for the club’s U-23s.
