Darren Bent has suggested that Tottenham midfielder Dele Alli is unhappy with Mauricio Pochettino behind-the-scenes after coming under fire for his performances in recent months.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Spurs and England forward claims that Pochettino’s decision to use the English midfielder in a variety of roles means the 23-year-old has not played to the best of his capabilities.
The Argentine boss has utilised Alli not only in his natural attacking midfield role but as a central midfielder and even on the left-hand side of the forward line.
Bent says that Alli will not be too happy picking up criticism when he is not playing in his preferred position and that he could have held behind-the-scenes talks with his manager.
Bent told Football Insider: “With Dele Alli getting criticism, he thinks: ‘Well hold on, I’m not playing in my right position.’
“Then he’s going to moan to Pochettino saying: ‘You’re not playing me in my right position and I’m getting all this criticism.’
“It can start to be an awkward spiral that can spiral out of control.”
Last season saw Alli struggle with niggling muscular injuries which limited him to playing 38 games across all competitions, scoring seven goals and notching up eight assists.
He has a total of 184 games under his belt since his move to north London, while he has also picked up 37 caps for England.
In other Tottenham news, it can be REVEALED that a number of Premier League sides are battling it out for a Spurs talent Pochettino has given the green light to leave.
