EXCLUSIVE By Pete O’Rourke
Crystal Palace are working on beating Southampton to the late-window signing of Tottenham right-back Kyle Walker-Peters, Football Insider can reveal.
Now, a Palace source has told Football Insider the Londoners have joined the race and been given indications during their enquiries that the full-back, 22, is available for a late-window loan.
Palace have edged Southampton as the favourites to sign Walker-Peters and are now in pole position to secur what would be a landmark late signing.
Mauricio Pochettino is ready to green light the temporary exit of Walker-Peters even though Kieran Trippier has been sold to Atletico Madrid this summer and Serge Aurier is in talks to join Paris Saint-Germain permanently.
The Spurs academy product has featured prominently for Tottenham during pre-season and is in line to start their Premier League opener against Aston Villa on Saturday following Trippier’s exit and an injury to Juan Foyth.
There is now the prospect that Spurs’ senior three right-backs from last season will not be at the club beyond this summer’s window.
Foyth, a centre-back by trade, is set to provide cover in the position, while Pochettino is also set to recruit a new right-back by tomorrow evening if he allows Walker-Peters to temporarily exit.
The former England Under-21 international has been highly regarded at Tottenham since his mid-teens and was expected to establish himself in the first team.
But he has only made 19 senior appearances and failed to convince the manager and his staff he is ready to play regularly.
In other Spurs news, it can be REVEALED that the club are close to signing a record-breaking attacker.
