Darren Bent has suggested that Aston Villa striker Scott Hogan will have wanted to leave the club on a permanent basis as he closes in on a loan move to Stoke City.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Villa and England striker says that the 27-year-old has struggled to show his best form in the midlands, having joined the club from Brentford back in January 2017.
As revealed exclusively by Football Insider, the Republic of Ireland hitman is set to undergo a medical with Championship outfit Stoke ahead of a temporary move back to the Championship.
Having been shipped out on loan to fellow promotion-winners Sheffield United for the second half of last season, Bent says he is surprised not to see him leaving Villa Park permanently rather than on another temporary deal.
Bent told Football Insider: “He’s found it tough to be fair, had to play second fiddle behind Tammy Abraham, before that Kodjia’s come in and he’s struggled to get ahead of Kodjia.
“I am quite surprised he’s not wanted to go (permanently), maybe somewhere else in the Championship because we know if he plays, he scores goals.
“People say he moved from one Championship club to another so it shouldn’t make too much of a difference but when you talk about Brentford to Aston Villa, the histroy, the size of the club, we’ve seen the best of them struggle.
“You’d like to think he’s going to go somewhere on loan in the Championship, rediscover that goalscoring form because we know he’s capable of doing that and get himself back going again.”
Hogan has scored just 10 goals in 61 appearances for Villa, with six of those outings coming in the Championship last season.
His loan at Sheffield United saw him play backup to the likes of Billy Sharp, with five starts and two goals in eight appearances.
In other Aston Villa news, it can be REVEALED that the club are working on a deal to sign another West Brom star.
