Exclusive: Darren Bent tears into Aston Villa player who Smith is starting to lose faith in

Darren Bent tore into Aston Villa attacker Wesley after admitting Dean Smith is starting to lose faith in the striker.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Laura O’Leary, the ex-Villans attacker shared he got on Wesley’s back because Villa need to score goals and he just isn’t delivering the goods.

The 23-year-old has failed to find the net in his last nine appearances with Smith subbing him off around the 70th-minute mark in the 2-0 loss to Sheffield United.

Bent confessed that Wesley was trying everything he can to succeed but added he simply hasn’t lived up to expectations.

When asked if Smith is starting to lose faith in Wesley based on him being subbed with 20 minutes to go, Bent told Football Insider: “Yeah, listen I’ve watched Wesley closely and he just looks like a guy that has no confidence.

“He is trying everything he can, fans are getting on his back and the media, which is me included, I get on his back and I do it because Villa need goals.

“They’re in a relegation battle, no doubt about it, they need someone who can put the ball into the back of the net.

“Obviously he showed signs early on he could be the guy, but unfortunately he hasn’t lived up to expectations.

“So I think Villa need to get someone in.”

Wesley arrived at Villa Park from Belgian side Club Brugge in the summer with the Premier League side paying an initial £22million for his services.

The Brazilian has managed a grand total of four goals in his first 17 appearances for the club, which includes the brace he scored against Norwich City.
