Derby County are lining up a move for Wigan Athletic defender Nathan Byrne, Football Insider can exclusively reveal.
The Rams have identified the 28-year-old as a potential replacement for Jayden Bogle who completed a move to Sheffield United this evening.
A recruitment source has told Football Insider that Derby have set their sights on signing the right-back as they look to capitalise on the Latics’ bleak financial situation.
It would be difficult for Wigan to turn down an offer for the defender with Bryne into the final 12 months of his contract at the DW Stadium and able to leave on a free next summer.
The Englishman rose up the ranks at Tottenham but failed to make a senior appearance for the club before joining Swindon Town in 2013.
Since then he has played for Wolves, Charlton and Wigan for whom he has appeared 136 times.
Last season Byrne’s 39 Championship appearances yielded an impressive eight assists but it was not enough to save Paul Cook’s side from relegation after they were docked 12 points for entering administration.
Derby boss Phillip Cocu is in need of defensive reinforcements at Pride Park after Sheffield United confirmed a double deal for full-backs Jayden Bogle and Max Lowe – Football Insider revealed yesterday that both transfers were close to completion.
The pair join goalkeepers Wes Foderingham and Aaron Ramsdale, who signed for a club-record £18.5million fee last month, as new arrivals at Bramall Lane.

George Baldock started every league game for the Blades last season and manager Chris Wilder wants Bogle to provide the 27-year-old with some much-needed competition on the right side of the defence.
