AZ Alkmaar have opened talks about signing Tottenham defender Marqes Muir this month, Football Insider understands.
The centre-back, 18, has been targeted by the Dutch Eredivisie outfit six months ahead of his scholarship contract at Spurs ending.
A Dutch source has told Football Insider that Alkmaar are increasingly confident of sealing a deal for Muir.
The Dutch top-flight club want to sign Muir this month and then loan him out for the rest of the season in order to gain first-team experience.
Discussions are taking place over a transfer ahead of 1 February and, if an agreement can be reached, Tottenham would be entitled to training compensation for the youngster.
London-born Muir joined Spurs in the summer of 2019 on a two-year scholarship contract.
He has been a regular for their Under-18s side and captained them on a number of occasions in the last two seasons.
Muir has also featured for the Under-23s and has impressed the Spurs hierarchy with the maturity of his performances.
A ball-playing centre-back in the truest Tottenham traditions, the teenager made his UEFA Youth Champions League debut away to Bayern Munich in 2019.
Muir has made nine appearances in the Under-18 Premier League for the north Londoners this season but did not make the squad for their last match against West Brom at the end of December.
Alkmaar are fifth in this season’s Dutch Eredivisie table, seven points behind leaders Ajax with 16 rounds of matches completed.
