Gabriel Agbonlahor has urged Everton manager Carlo Ancelotti to sign a new pair of wing-backs after Alex Iwobi and Tom Davies were “frightened” against Leeds United.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley, the former Aston Villa and England striker expressed his sympathy for the young pair playing out of position.

Ancelotti’s first-choice full-back pairing of Seamus Coleman and Lucas Digne missed the game through injury.

Digne is set to miss up to two months of action with an ankle injury while Coleman suffered a hamstring injury against Liverpool last month.

Winger Iwobi and midfielder Davies started at left and right wing-back in Everton’s 3-4-3 system against Leeds.

“It was very hard for them,” Agbonlahor told Football Insider.

“If you’re looking at Iwobi and Davies they’re not defenders so when you ask them to play in that position it’s tough for anyone.

“If I had to play in those positions I would be frightened. Those positions are where you do the most running in the team, it’s not their fault they were frightened and asked to play there.

“Ancelotti has got a lot of injuries in wing-back and full-back roles, he just put his fittest players available in there.

“You saw Fabian Delph play in that position so he’s looking at who he can trust in that position until the injured players come back.

“That position is tough because you don’t know whether to take the winger or the full-back so it’s something that only a natural defender will understand.

“Maybe it’s something Everton need to look at it in the future, to add more strength in depth in full-back positions.”
