Everton are planning a move for highly-rated Chelsea defender Reece James this summer, Football Insider understands.

James has enjoyed an outstanding season out on loan at Wigan Athletic this term and his superb form has brought him to the attention of a number of Premier League clubs.

The 19-year-old swept the boards at Wigan's end of season awards night and he was also named in the EFL Championship Team of the Year.

The likes of Manchester United, Brighton and Burnley have been linked with moves for James, but an Everton source has told Football Insider the Merseysiders are determined to land the England Under-20 international after earmarking him as one of their top transfer targets.

Everton see James a potential star in the making and someone who could act as a long-term replacement for current first-choice right-back Seamus Coleman.

Rampaging full-back James has yet to make his first-team debut for Chelsea but made 46 appearances for Wigan this season, scoring three goals and supplying three assists.

It remains to be seen if Chelsea would consider letting James go this summer due to their impending transfer ban which would prevent them from signing any new players for the next two transfer windows if it comes into effect.
