Kevin Campbell has laid into “snob” Arsenal fans for dismissing summer signing Willian.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Gunners striker revealed he was “overjoyed” when his old club prised the Brazilian attacker from rivals Chelsea on a free transfer.
The capture did not go down well with sections of Arsenal’s vast fan base and that has continued during a mixed start in north London for Willian.
The 32-year-old has yet to score in 10 games for his new club and his only two assists came in the opening-day Premier League win over Fulham.
Campbell is in no doubt that Willian will prove his critics wrong in a red-and-white jersey.
He told Football Insider: “I watched Willian last season and I thought he was in Chelsea’s top 3 players. I could not believe that they could not do a deal to keep him at the club.
“I know they only wanted to offer him one year and he wanted three but I could not believe that they could not work out a compromise.
“To my surprise, he came onto the market and I was overjoyed that Mikel Arteta went for Willian. A superb player that can play in multiple positions.
“He is still fit and strong and he gives Arsenal another dimension with his running power. Such a good player.
“I know a lot of Arsenal fans and sometimes they are snobs, seriously they are snobs sometimes, ‘We are getting another cast off from Chelsea.’ That is not a cast off to me.”
Willian had an outstanding record during his seven years at Chelsea and has also accumulated 69 Brazil caps.
The winger was a regular scorer and creator for the Blues last season, with his 47 matches yielding 11 goals and nine assists.
