Alan Hutton believes Celtic will be very reluctant to meet Odsonne Edouard’s demands of a release clause in contract talks.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, the former Scotland full-back insists the Hoops will want to ignite a bidding war for his sale when he does eventually leave Parkhead.
As revealed exclusively by Football Insider, the French forward is demanding a release clause to be included in his contract if he is to sign a new deal at Parkhead.
It is understood the Bhoys are very keen at offering him new and improved terms but that the striker’s camp are reluctant to enter “serious” negotiations at the moment.
Hutton insists a release clause would give the player all the power over his future and suggests it could prove a major stumbling block if talks do open.
Hutton told Football Insider: “I think when you put a release clause in, it is what it is, every team will then know the figure they have to come up with.
“Celtic as a business, as a club, they’ll want the biggest money possible for him, a bidding war, whatever you want to call it.
“It pretty much puts all the cards in Edouard’s hands because he can look exactly what the figure is. There’s no messing about then – any club that comes in for him just has to agree that clause and then he can speak to them.
“I can see why Celtic wouldn’t want to put something like that in but the only way around it is you put a bigger one in! The only thing is Edouard would have to agree to it so it’s a tricky situation.”
Edouard has been a star performer for the Bhoys since signing on an initial loan from PSG, with 60 goals in 126 appearances.
He has struck 27 times and chipped in with 19 assists this season, his 21 Premiership goals placing him as the league’s top scorer so far.
