Rangers have tabled a £3million bid for Millwall defender Jake Cooper, Football Insider sources understands.

New Rangers boss Steven Gerrard has identified Cooper as one of his top targets as he looks to continue his reshaping of the squad at Ibrox.

A number of English clubs are also thought to be weighing up moves for Cooper, but Rangers are aiming to steal a march in the race for the centre-back.

A well-placed source has told Football Insider that Gerrard has firmed up his interest with a £3million bid as he looks to test Millwall’s resolve to hang onto Cooper.

Gerrard has already made eight new signings since taking over Rangers this summer and he is hoping to add towering central defender Cooper to his ranks.

Cooper has impressed at Milwall since joining the club from Reading last summer on a permanent basis following a successful loan spell the season before.

The 23-year-old was instrumental in Millwall’s surprise push for promotion last season before just missing out on the play-offs, making 42 appearances in all competitions and chipping in with four goals and three assists.

Millwall are reluctant to lose Cooper and it remains to be seen if they will be able to turn down £3million for the former England Under-20 international.

In other Rangers news, the Scottish giants have been made overwhelming favourites to sign a Premier League striker with a glittering record.
