Kevin Phillips has claimed that Steven Gerrard will be “working extremely hard” on bringing in a striker with Alfredo Morelos nearing his Rangers exit.
The former England international, speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs, admits the timing of the 24-year-old’s potential departure is bad news with Jermain Defoe sidelined.
The Colombian started the 1-0 victory against Aberdeen on Saturday but it may have been the final appearance he makes for the Glasgow giants.
Football Insider revealed on Thursday that the Gers are in advanced talks to sell their star striker to Lille for a fee in the region of £17million.
His potentially imminent departure is worsened by the absence of second-choice striker Defoe who missed the victory at Pittodrie with a hamstring injury.
When asked by Football Insider for his assessment of the striking situation at Ibrox, Phillips said:
“Everyone is talking about Rangers and Stevie G challenging this year so it is not ideal when you have Jermain out injured and Morelos potentially on the verge of a move. It cannot be good news.
“He might have to shift the squad around a bit if Morelos is to leave.
“Stevie will be working extremely hard to get someone in as quickly as possible.”
Morelos has scored a total of 77 goals in 137 appearances for the Teddy Bears and netted 29 times across all competitions last season.
Josh Maja, Ivan Toney, Lyndon Dykes, Lyle Taylor and Rhian Brewster have all been discussed as potential replacements for the Colombian international.
