Alan Hutton claims that Tottenham manager Jose Mourinho will “hate” what he has seen from defender Juan Foyth.
The former Spurs and Scotland full-back, speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor, says the Argentine centre-back failed to do the basics in his rare runout against Norwich City.
Having been hooked at half-time against the Canaries by Mourinho, the 21-year-old was left completely out of the matchday squad for Wednesday’s 1-0 defeat to Southampton.
Hutton says that he has never been convinced by Foyth’s defensive capabilities and says he will have his manager tearing his hair out with his poor decision making.
Hutton told Football Insider: “The one thing when I watch him, he looks very rash. Every time he’s going to the ball or closing a player down I’m saying to myself: ‘He’s going to foul him.’
“He’s giving away fouls, needless fouls, in dangerous areas constantly. Just stand and he does it again. When I was watching the game (v Norwich) I was thinking he’s going to give something away, he’s going to do something daft.
“It doesn’t surprise me that the manager stepped in. I’ve seen it through the years, it’s the one thing that managers hate – needless fouls around about the box. He seems to do it all the time. He was giving the ball away, needless passes away when there’s a simple pass on.
“Footballers have off days, I get it, but you’re a professional footballer playing in the Premier League, you should do the basics well, if not, you’re going to come off.”
Foyth has played seven times for the Lilywhites this season, finding himself in and out of the matchday squads under Mourinho.
