Alan Hutton claims Aston Villa midfielder John McGinn will be “very close” to being fit enough to play when the season returns later this month.

The former Villa and Scotland defender, speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, has revealed his fellow countryman is “absolutely desperate” to get back playing.

Villa stars Jack Grealish and Tyrone Mings have both been left raving after the 25-year-old midfielder returned to training after his lengthy layoff with an ankle injury.

McGinn has not featured for Dean Smith’s men since December, having played in every single minute of the club’s Premier League campaign prior to his injury blow.

Hutton admits it will be a “massive boost” to see the midfielder back on the pitch but questions whether his notable lack of game time may delay his return to the starting XI.

Hutton told Football Insider: “I think he’ll be very close, he’s full training now – the only thing is he missed a lot of football before the March shutdown.

“Whether the manager sees him as able enough to go straight back in, we’ll have to wait and see but I know he’s desperate, absolutely desperate and he feels he’s ready to go.

“That will be a decision down to the manager but I think, myself included, all the fans are desperate to see him out on the pitch because he brings so much to the team and it’s what they’ve been missing, they’ve been missing John McGinn.

“When he was out injured, you could tell they missed him, so to have him back would be a massive boost.”

McGinn has played 20 times across all competitions this season, with three goals and two assists under his belt.

Villa currently sit 19th in the Premier League table with 10 games left to play, one more than their relegation rivals.
