Alan Hutton is unsurprised Steven Gerrard rejected Birmingham City but claimed the real test for Rangers will come if a Premier League club make a move.

The former Aston Villa and Gers defender, speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, insists that rival interest will be building for the 40-year-old but that it would take a bigger club than the Blues to turn his head.

As revealed by Football Insider last week, Gerrard turned down the Championship outfit’s approach as they seek out a replacement for the departing Pep Clotet.

Hutton believes it was an ambitious move from Birmingham but insists there will be bigger and better sides keeping a close eye on the Liverpool legend’s progress.

Hutton told Football Insider: “We all know he’s such a big name in the sport, he’s at a massive club at Rangers at the moment who play in Europe and have done excellently well so it doesn’t surprise me there’s going to be teams watching him and wanting him.

“The Birmingham one, I never thought that would be a goer, to be honest, it would be a step back to be honest. The real pressure will come when it’s a Premier League team who come in and want to take him.

“At the moment he’s building something at Rangers, he’s doing really well and I really think he wants to take Rangers to the next level and that’s to win trophies.”

Gerrard joined Rangers back in 2018 and has taken them to finish as runners-up to Celtic in both Premiership seasons.

He is yet to pick up any silverware in Glasgow, having been defeated by the Bhoys in the Scottish League Cup final earlier this season.

In other Rangers news, a journalist has waxed lyrical to Football Insider as the club finalise “outstanding” new signing.
