Exclusive: Hutton 'Surprised' by reported decision on Celtic player who looks 'Out of his depth'

Alan Hutton admitted he was surprised to hear Celtic had thrown out a loan approach from Stoke City for attacker Lewis Morgan.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Laura O’Leary, the former Scotland international revealed a loan move to Stoke could have work wonders for Morgan as he would have gotten regular playing time.

It was reported recently that not only did Celtic director of football Nicky Hammond reject the Potters’ approach, he made it clear the Hoops aren’t interested in loaning the 23-year-old out.

Hutton explained that Morgan looked out of his depth against Rangers recently and suggested that he’d only been featuring recently due to other players being unavailable.

When asked if Celtic should consider loaning Morgan out as he seems to be struggling and may soon fall down the pecking order, Hutton told Football Insider: “Yeah I think because of injury, with Edouard picking up a knock though he’s been back recently, he’s been playing.

“I think he was a little out of his depth in the final (against Rangers) if I’m honest, so I think a move like that would have really helped him.

“He’s a young boy and he will want to play regular football, he’s not going to play week-in-week-out at Celtic, so ideally for him in this period of his career, you just want to play and get experience.

“I’m surprised at that because Stoke are a massive club, yes they’re struggling currently, but they’re a huge club.

“Yes, he could go there and really progress as a player as he’d be playing all the time and as a result, he’d go from strength to strength.

“To be honest I see it as a negative just to sit at Celtic as if it was me I’d want to go and play games.”

Morgan has played 18 times across all competitions this season for Neil Lennon’s side and has scored two goals as well as registered three assists in the process.

In previous seasons the Hoops have opted to loan the 23-year-old out with him having temporary spells at both St Mirren as well as Sunderland.
