Kevin Phillips has claimed that Celtic or Rangers would be getting a “very exciting young player” in Bright Osayi-Samuel if either can agree a pre-contract with the QPR forward.
The former England international, speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs, expects that a few Premier League clubs will be “sniffing around” the 22-year-old as well.
The winger has entered the final nine months of his contract at Loftus Road and looks set to leave the London club, possibly in January or on a free transfer next summer.
Football Insider revealed that Celtic are working to sign the wide man on a pre-contract but face competition from England and neighbours Rangers.
Osayi-Samuel‘s 40 matches across all competitions last season yielded an impressive six goals and nine assists as QPR languished to 13th in the Championship.
When asked by Football Insider where he thinks the winger should move to best help his development, Phillips said:
“It would be a big signing for one of those do but I would like to see the kid stay in England. Those two clubs will be playing European football and that is a big draw.
“The kid did so well last year I think he deserves a crack at one of the lower Premier League sides and I am sure there are a few sniffing around. I would like to see him develop in the Premier League because he did so well last season.
“If Rangers or Celtic got hold of the kid they would be getting a very exciting young player.”
Osayi-Samuel, who can play on both the right and left flank, emigrated to England from Nigeria at the age of just 10.
He rose up the ranks at Blackpool before securing a move to QPR in 2017.
In other Celtic news, Phillips reacts as “best player in League One” issues come-and-get-me-plea.
