Kevin Phillips has urged Matheus Pereira to ignore interest from West Ham United and stay at West Brom this summer.
The 2000 European Golden Shoe winner, speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs, hoped reports linking the 23-year-old to the Hammers do not unsettle the player.
Pereira has been a standout performer for Slaven Bilic’s side the campaign scoring six goals and providing 16 assists in his 34 Championship appearances.
As revealed by Football Insider on Wednesday, the Hammers are monitoring the Brazilian playmaker ahead of a potential summer move.
When asked whether the West Brom fans’ favourite would be tempted by a switch to the London Stadium, Phillips told Football Insider: “Everyone is going to be looking at players in the Championship who are flying and who have done well. No surprise there. That is credit to the player for performing.
“It is this stage of the season where these rumours can work to unease a player or put doubt into his mind. Only Pereira knows where he will want to play next season. I hope it is with the Baggies in the Premier League.
“When a player has helped a club get promotion you often see them stay because they feel happy and wanted because that is usually the case.”
Pereira is currently on loan at the Baggies from Portuguese side Sporting Lisbon with a permanent move likely to command a fee of around £8million.
The Irons already strengthened their squad with the arrival of a Championship player in January when they signed Jarrod Bowen from Hull City.
In other West Ham news, Darren Bent has told Football Insider potential signing from title hopefuls baffles him.
