Exclusive: Kevin Phillips Wowed as Sunderland plot swoop to sign 21yo from PL giants
Kevin Phillips has backed Chelsea goalkeeper Nathan Baxter to handle the pressure of the number one jersey at Sunderland if he is signed this summer.
The Stadium of Light legend, speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs, was confident that the experience of playing with elite level goalkeepers at Chelsea would equip him well for a season in League One.
The Evening Standard report that the Black Cats are interested in a loan deal for the 21-year-old, who is highly rated at Stamford Bridge.
Championship sides Birmingham City and Derby County are also said to be interested in the English shot-stopper who has three years remaining on his contract at Stamford Bridge.
Baxter spent the first half of last season in Scotland with Ross County and has also enjoyed loan spells at Yeovil Town, Woking, Solihull Moors.
When asked by Football Insider if a move for the young keeper would be a risk given the high stakes on Wearside next season, Phillips said:

“It is always difficult but this lad will be under pressure every day in training. He is working with world-class goalkeepers. Having been a coach there is huge pressure in training every day. I have seen it happen.
“I have seen experienced goalkeepers give young goalkeepers a telling off because it effects their training. He has experienced a different kind of pressure.
“To be number one at Sunderland would be a challenge. The advantage anyone coming into Sunderland is that there is no pressure from supporters on your back. That will benefit young players coming to Sunderland.
“Baxter clearly has quality, otherwise he would not be at Chelsea, so I think he would do alright.”
