EXCLUSIVE By Pete O’Rourke

Leeds’ United hopes of signing Newcastle goalkeeper Karl Darlow are over with the Magpies refusing to let him leave during this month’s transfer window, Football Insider understands.

Leeds had targeted a move for Darlow as they look to bolster their goalkeeping options this month and had held extensive talks over a possible deal for the former Nottingham Forest shot-stopper.

However, a well-placed source has told Football Insider that Darlow looks set to stay at Newcastle this month with Rafa Benitez blocking any loan or permanent move for the 28-year-old.

The news is a blow for Leeds and Darlow as both parties were keen to get a deal done during this month’s transfer window

Leeds are seeking experienced keeper to provide cover and competition for current No.1 Bailey Peacock-Farrell and former England U21 man Darlow was their top target.

Darlow was also interested in a move to Elland Road in search of regular first-team football, having made just one appearance in the Carabao Cup for Newcastle so far this season.

Leeds are now set to look elsewhere for a new goalkeeper and Football Insider sources understands they are now looking at Spain for a possible new goalkeeping arrival.

In other Leeds United transfer news, it can be revealed the club have opened preliminary talks to sign the leader scorer of the league leaders.
