EXCLUSIVE By Pete O’Rourke
Leeds defender Tom Pearce is undergoing a medical at Wigan after they hijacked Barnsley’s move for the defender, Football Insider understands.
Barnsley were expected to sign Pearce after agreeing a fee with Leeds earlier on Wednesday, but Wigan also had an offer accepted by Leeds.
A source close to Leeds has told Football Insider that Pearce has been given permission to hold talks and undergo a medical at Wigan and the Latics are now poised to win the race for the left-back’s signature.
Wigan are confident of tying up a move for Pearce before the transfer window slams shut on Thursday as Latics boss Paul Cook looks to strengthen his side’s defensive options.
The England Under-21 international has found himself out-of-favour at Leeds under Marcelo Bielsa and he has been training away from the first-team in pre-season.
This will come as a major blow to Barnsley who had thought a deal was in place for the talented left-back.
